Karen Loader is a London based visual artist

Her artistic practice ranges from site-specific installations to works on paper and painting. She is particularly interested in how our perception of place is formed, not only by our visual observations of it, but also by the sensations we feel when moving through that place. Inspired by life in an urban environment, her practice starts by observing the subtle similarities and differences of form and surface that emerge by noticing opposing qualities of light and dark, soft and smooth, near and far – characteristics that contribute to the atmosphere and mood of a place and lead to psychological as well as physical responses. Her processes are reductive and repetitive allowing her to arrange various elements into some kind of logical order, but she also embraces the moments of chance when the process of making reveals something unexpected and unrepeatable. Her use of colour is subjective and reflects seasonal and diurnal changes that affect how we feel about different spaces at different times and how this generates a unique experience of place. The resulting works are condensed responses to experiences of place that fuse perception, memory and imagination.
